Look! Up in the Sky! It’s a Bird… It’s a Plane…

Superman debuted in Action Comics #1, created by author Jerry Siegel and illustrator Joe Shuster. Since 1938, he has become an American icon that has swooped across all media. The symbol on his chest is easily recognized around the world, inspiring many mortals to be better people.

He is the ultimate American dream. Not just an immigrant, but an alien from another planet. Earthlings are lucky he fell to Kansas to be raised by a loving, hard-working family that instilled such a strong moral compass in him. He then moves to the big city of Metropolis, gets hired as a reporter and finds the love of his life, Lois Lane. All that and oh, wait. Did I mention he can fly? Yes, that’s where I should I have started.

The light of our yellow sun granted this man powers of flight, speed, strength, invincibility, heat / X-ray vision and cold breath. Those abilities have evolved with the character over the last 80 years. But for me, as a child, it was the flight that astounded my young mind. Wow, a man can fly!

Ogre In Superman CostumeI had my mom fashion me my own “costume” and I lived in that thing. Every day was spent playing with Superman toys, running around the house pretending to be Superman and recreating scenes from Super Friends.

The simple joy this character brought me then and brings me now is one of the reasons I love comics so much. I could go on and on about Big Blue and the greater impact he has on my life, but I want you to check out his comic books and find your love of Superman.

One of my first super hero favorites! I remember wearing a towel as a cape and flowing around the living room fighting crime (well, my dog anyways) Even though im more a fan of Iron Man these days, Superman will always have a place in my super hero heart.

  • Superman is my favorite super hero!! To me, he was the real deal. Other super heroes have to have a hammer, or a self-made gadget suit, or a supped-up car! BUT NOT Superman!! All he had to do is change his clothes, and the rest was ALL him! His abilities was in his DNA and he used it for fighting evil and doing good deeds!
